Anchorage

We are in Anchorage tonight. Brian has another one of his Alaska Administrator Coaching Project meetings, and we decided to make a family trip of it.  We got up this morning and hit the road around 9:30AM and arrived here right about 4:30PM – 7 hour trip with a couple of stops.  We were worried because the roads had been really bad lately after our statewide Chinook that melted the snow and ice, but they were great, and we had lots of daylight as we drove south.

Jacob has been asking for MONTHS if we could go to Chuck-E-Cheese.  So, for dinner tonight, that’s where we went!  He had a blast and I’m sure will be asking if we can go back tomorrow.  Other plans for the trip include shopping at the state’s new Target (!), going to a semi-real mall, looking for a prom dress (early) for Jamiee since there is more variety down here, swimming at the indoor water park, and eating at Moose’s Tooth.  It’ll be fun exploring another city with the kids.

As I was unpacking in the hotel tonight, I was reminded of a conversation that I recently had with Brian.  During nearly all of our time here in Alaska, we have lived in the bush.  Trips to town were regular and spent in hotels.  We have spent A LOT of nights in hotels.  Now that we’re in our house, I mentioned to Brian how strange it was that we have not spent a night in a hotel in six months!  At least this time, it’s for fun – not groceries!

Number five today

Got to call poison control again today after Tobias ate some ice melt that I threw down on our steps.
He had been eating ice, so I specifically said, “This is not ice, it is poison. Do not eat this!” So, what does he do five minutes later? Eat it, of course!

Poison control said no worries – it’s pretty much salt and potassium chloride and to give him plenty of water.

What a handful…

Sick kids

Since we’ve had kids, we have not really had to deal with illnesses.   Maybe it was all the time spent in the bush with limited exposure to other kids, but whatever it’s been, it’s been really nice.

Unfortunately, about two weeks before the Christmas break, Jamiee came down with a stomach virus that was severe enough to take her to the hospital for rehydration.  After a couple of days, Tobias came down with the same thing.  While hers lasted about two days, Toby’s hung on for about eight.  I thought Jacob was had it too, but it turns out that he just has the same see-it, smell-it  reflex that I do.  Which, surprisingly did not hit me this time – even with Toby vomiting on my chest!

About a day after he was over the stomach bug, Toby caught pink eye and then passed it on to Sarah.  The pediatrician prescribed new antibiotic eyedrops that was not sold as generic.  I didn’t even look at it before I gave it to the pharmacist, so I was shocked when I had to pay $40 for the smallest bottle of drops that you’ve ever seen!  They worked fast though and that too passed.

This past Friday, Toby (again) came down with fever that hovered around 102°-103°F.  After 24 hours of little relief, I took him to the pediatrician, mostly to rule out a urinary tract infection since he’s been potty training (SUCCESSFULLY!).  All was clear and I was told that he was the fifth high fever brought in that day for our pediatrician.  She said to keep him hydrated and wait for it to pass.  We’re now on day three and Jacob has picked it up as well.  Toby’s high has been 103.8°.  Jacob’s high so far has been 102.4°, but he’s only in his 24 hours.

They both want to cuddle all day, so we’ve been watching a lot of videos.  Sarah is feeling abandoned evidenced by her constant whimpering to be picked up.  I feel bad for her, but the boys need me a bit more right now.

I feel the worst for Toby with this being his third illness in such a short period of time.  When Toby had the stomach flu, he wanted to eat all kinds of things, but would throw them up pretty fast, so I had to tell him “No, that will make your tummy hurt.” After  hearing that for a week, he has not been able to let it go.  There are foods that he has always loved, but will not eat now in fear that they will make his tummy hurt again.

I’m just hoping that it passes quickly and hoping that this doesn’t continue all semester!  I’ve always heard that kids start getting sick when you put them in the nursery, school, and playgroups. Guess it’s true for us now too!

Happy New Year

Happy 2009!

2008 had it’s moments, but overall, I would not call it one of my best years. I will say that 2008 may have been my hardest year though with our separation for the first three months while the kids and I were in Texas, then Sarah’s surgery and the unknown that came along with all that. And currently, our separation during the week with Brian commuting.

I’m looking forward to the changes that 2009 will bring! Happy New Year to you all!
