Anticipation

I love Christmas.  I love every bit of it.  Shopping, wrapping, decorating, lights, music, warm fuzzy feelings, the Advent.  It’s all great.

So, today was the day after Thanksgiving, and in my eager anticipation for the season to begin, my morning declaration to Brian was that I either needed to start decorating or buy something.  He did not want to decorate, so I got to go shopping.  Yipee!

I didn’t go crazy.  In fact, I didn’t buy much, but I did make a trip to our friendly Fred Meyer and picked up Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur and a cute plaid Christmas dress for Sarah.  Made me feel much better.

I am still feeling the need to start decorating.  I wonder how long Brian’ll make me hold off…

Christmas conversation

Jacob: Remember when me and Toby rode in the car cart and Jamiee said “Let’s go look at toys.”

Me: Yes.  That was at Fred Meyer.  Did you have fun?

Jacob: YEAH!

Me: Is that something you want to do again?

Jacob (ignoring the question): And then you bought the dinosaur because I saw you.

Me:  I don’t know Jacob.  Are you sure?

Jacob: Yes.  I saw it.

Me:  Well, then what do you think happened to it?

Jacob:  I think you wrapped it and put it under the tree for Christmas.

Me:  Oh really?

Jacob:  Yes.

Me:  Well, if it is under the tree where do you think it is?

Jacob:  I think it is this green one with the candy canes on it.

Me: Hmm.  Well, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Jacob:  Well, I think we can open it now.

Me: I think no.  We have to wait until Christmas.

Jacob: Oh.

What to give the mailman

We have a really great mailman. His name is Derek. Jacob and Toby have been infactuated with him since we moved into the house because of the Backyardigan’s song “I never fail to deliver the mail.” He knows my name and the boys names and greets all of us when we see him. He brings all of our packages to the door and when we have a large amount of mail, he’ll also bring it up to the door instead of stuffing the box.

In all the places I’ve lived since I left home, I’ve never had a regular mail carrier, so a gift has not been something that I’ve needed to think about. This year though, I’ve been mulling over what to do for Derek. I’d like the boys to make a card, but then what else?

We are guessing that Derek is a single guy. He’s probably in his late 20s, so Brian thinks that I should bake something, but since we’re not actually friends, I wonder about giving something homemade.

I also found this interesting article on the USPS website. I thought I had heard once that you should give cash, but apparently that’s not permitted according to the USPS guidelines.

Our church is having a parent’s day out on Saturday from 10-4, so we are spending the day shopping. I have some ideas, but I’m curious about what you think. Do you give your mail carrier a gift? What have you done in the past? What will you do this year?
